Former U.S. presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama condemned political violence and offered condolences to Charlie Kirk’s family after he was killed in a horrific shooting on Wednesday.
At 4:40 p.m. EST, President Donald Trump announced that Charlie Kirk was pronounced dead, less than three hours after he was shot by an unknown gunman at Utah Valley University.
The horrifying incident has caused more grief and tension in a time when the United States is incredibly divided. As the nation deals with the unspeakable tragedy, Biden and Obama condemned political violence in powerful statements on X/Twitter:
“There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now. Jill and I are praying for Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones,” Biden wrote.
“We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children,” wrote Obama
Kirk rose to prominence at the age of 18 in 2012, when he co-founded Turning Point USA. A prominent conservative activist and online personality, Kirk also served as a member for the Council for National Policy.
Police are still actively searching for the suspect, who has yet to be identified. Shortly after the shooting, folks incorrectly stated that an elderly man being detained by police was the shooter.
